Blurb (from Goodreads):

If you could learn the identity of your one true love—even though you will never meet— would you?

Years have passed since refugees from a ruined earth took to space, eventually settling a new system of planets. Science has not only made the leaps necessary to allow time travel, but the process engineered a strange side effect—predicting your one true love.

If you could save your one true love from an untimely death, would you be able to resist?

Sixteen-year-old Kaia Vespasian is an apprentice to the Historians—a group charged with using time travel to document the triumphs and failures of the past—and she can’t resist a peek at her long-dead soul mate in Ancient Egypt. Before she knows it, she’s broken every rule in the book, and the consequences of getting caught could destroy more than just her new romance.

Or would you have the strength to watch him die?

But when Kaia notices a fellow classmate snooping around in a time where he doesn’t belong, she suspects he has a secret of his own—and the conspiracy she uncovers could threaten the entire universe. If her experience has taught her anything, to changing history means facing the consequences. The Historians trained her to observe and record the past, but Kaia never guessed she might have to protect it— in a race across time to save her only chance at a future.

Return Once More was a fast and enjoyable read. Although I didn’t fall in love with this book but I immensely liked the concept which was totally fresh and unique.

Kaia along with other people live in a different planet because earth is not inhabitable anymore. She is training to be a historian. The historians go back in time and observe the situation with their own eyes and analyse them so that they can prevent a massive disaster from happening again. And during their 17th birthday, they get to know the identity of their one true love. Similarly, Kaia learns that as well but she can’t help herself and goes beyond her limit which causes a change in the history which could farther cause disastrous consequences if she doesn’t fix them in time. Also she begins to understand that everything they had been taught so far, might not be all true.

I absolutely love the concept of time travel. And this was executed well here. This was actually the first thing that caught my attention that made me immediately want to read this book. Kaia was an interesting character, she was curious and smart but sometimes she made impulsive decesions as well. When she learned the identity of her true love, she couldn’t resist herself. This book went back into the ancient times, absolutely in the time of Julius Caesar. I enjoyed the setting and the time travel. But the romantic aspect bothered me, I understand it was an important aspect but she barely knew the guy and in their third meeting she’s already saying she’s in love with him. That part was a bit unrealistic and I would have loved if it was the slow burn kind but other than this fact I found this book to be interesting.

Oz was a mysterious character which immediately made him interesting to me. I wanted to know more about him. He was also one of the true of Kaia’s best friend, Sarah. But after the way this book ended, I’m sure it’s going to a take a different turn and I’m very much interested to see what happens next. There was a strong possibility of a love triangle in this book but thankfully that didn’t happen. Though I feel there might be a possibility in the second book. Nonetheless I’m interested to find out.

The mystery surrounding Kaia’s brother, Jonah was well maintained, we only learn that he escaped the historians and has been living like a pirate witha few others. The plot was well laid in this book which managed to create a base of suspense and I feel things are going to be revealed as we proceed. The side characters were pretty interesting as well, specially Analeigh, she was a loyal and a great friend to Kaia.

Overall, Return Once More was an interesting read with a fresh concept and great set of characters although it felt it dragged on at some parts. The writing style was smooth and easy to read and the pace was even throughout the book. I didn’t have any problem and finished the book in two sittings. I can’t wait to read the next book!

  2. I don’t read enough time travel books. Actually the last one was probably Caroline B. Cooney’s Time Travelers Quartet, which is a series I’d love to revisit someday. I read it when I was a preteen and remembered really loving it. Anyway, I’m sorry the romance in this bothered you. It’d probably bother me; I mean declaring love that early? Bah! 😛

  3. Ahhh, okay but I LOVe that a character is called “Oz” because that’s the nickname for Australia so just…gah, that’s awesome. xD And the romance sounds a bit off and cliche, but that’s awesome that you loved the protagonist! And unique? Unique is good. *nods*
