What if damnation is the price of true love?

Innocent blood has been spilled on the steps of the Council Hall, the sacred stronghold of the Shadowhunters. In the wake of the tragic death of Livia Blackthorn, the Clave teeters on the brink of civil war. One fragment of the Blackthorn family flees to Los Angeles, seeking to discover the source of the disease that is destroying the race of warlocks. Meanwhile, Julian and Emma take desperate measures to put their forbidden love aside and undertake a perilous mission to Faerie to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead. What they find in the Courts is a secret that may tear the Shadow World asunder and open a dark path into a future they could never have imagined. Caught in a race against time, Emma and Julian must save the world of Shadowhunters before the deadly power of the parabatai curse destroys them and everyone they love.

I finally finished this trilogy! That means I can cross The Dark Artifices from my accountability list! Yayie! 😀 I reread this entire series and it has been a great boost up for my slump. I am completely out of my reading slump and I have to say, it is such a relief!!

THIS BOOK IS THE DEFINITION OF ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE.

A lot happened, like really a lot but oh god, I am in love with this book and the characters. This book was huge, more than 900 pages but I don’t think there was a single dull moment. I was thoroughly engaged.

Something or the other kept happening. Julian and Emma’s parabatai bond was slowly destroying them, their love for each other. Everything was a mess. It was a good book. I could not go to sleep because of it. Such joy. 🙂

It would not be sufficient to say how much I love Julian and Emma. Especially Jules. His character keeps developing and Cassandra Clare has done a tremendously good job in fleshing out all the characters.

The Blackthorn family is one of the topmost reason to read this book! My heart went out to all of them. Each of them was going through heartbreak and they had to grow up before the normal time period. And Emma was like a protector of them all.

I was apprehensive about Mark in bok 1 and I think I quite hated Kieran, especially because of the whipping incident. BUT, my feelings have completely done a 360-degree flip. Like, ohmygoodness, these two needs to bundled up and kept safe. And who is the candidate who can do this? Cristina!! I wish the world had more Cristinas. She is kind, wise and everything. *spoiler start* No wonder, Mark and Kieran fell head over heels for her. I was pretty surprised by the polyamorous representation, one because I haven’t read about it much, second, I was not completely aware of how this relationship worked. But this representation definitely made me aware and I was soooo happy for those three!! *spoiler end*

Mark was such a great brother. He really picked up the saddle. And Julian, I cannot stop gushing about him. Aside from being the world’s greatest brother and almost pro at single parenting, his ability to handle people and plotting and scheming mind was goddayum.

With this one, I have realised one thing, I like politics (only fantasy tho…I mean bookish stuff) and this book had so many themes and sub-themes (honestly, how does Cassandra Clare maintain this amount of coherency while writing her books?), politics was a consistent one. I was so soo irritated with the Cohort and especially Zara. (Who doesn’t want to strangle her?) They never learn their lesson BUT BUT Julian’s ploy, the big battle (although the giant stuff was sudden, not weird at all!), it was epic!

The climax was so satisfying in this book. In many books, the ultimate war sequence is over before it starts. However, in this book, it was elaborate and so many things were going on. I LOVED, LOVED IT!!

I LOVE CROSSOVERS!! I have always loved them, I remember when I was a kid and they had these crossover power-rangers episodes and I used to freak out with happiness. I feel the same happiness every time Clary (Maybe unpopular opinion but I love Clary to death!) and the rest of the gang along with Jem and Tessa shows up!

I have to say, I want more of the Fae world. Every time the gang went to the fae, things got more interesting and honestly, the fae not being able to lie yet their twisty words gets me every time. *spoiler start* Although the name of the book indicates Annabel, I felt her part of the story was cut short? Like, there was scope, but it randomly ended? *spoiler end* Also, Kit!!!! That smol little precious boy, oh my my, I hope we get to read more of him soooon. (Also his friendship with Ty…)

Also, what’s with the prologue? O_o Do l have to live with the anxiety that the prologue gave me? Overall, this book was everything! And I need more…

Recommend it?

OHMYGODYAAAS!

Review: Nimona and The Gods Lie // The only Manga Edition I possess (kind of!)

Title: Nimona

Standalone
Genre: Fantasy, [Young-Adult]
Heat Rating: Cool
Page Count & Format: 272 pages, Paperback
Published: May 12th 2015 by Harper Collins

Trigger alert: Fire, mentions of betrayal

Blurb (from Goodreads):

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism!

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Nimona is my very first venture into graphic novels. My friend bought this in the book fair and I remember reserving my spot for borrowing this book! 🙂

Here are some of my reasons why you should pick up this book!

  • The characters!

First of all Nimona, our protagonist is a badass chicka. On top of that, she is a shapeshifter with amazing fighting skills. She is full of humour and a bit, how should I phrase it… spontaneously edgy. Her character will keep you entertained from the very first page until the end. The book starts with Nimona pledging her apprenticeship to Blackheart, in a very comical manner, must I say!

Nimona, de Noelle Stevenson | Resenha - Eu, Astronauta Eu, Astronauta

Balister Blackheart reminded me a bit of Dr Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb. xD Weird reference, but Blackheart felt like a responsible and mature villain. The kind of villain you end up rooting for. The relationship between Blackheart and Nimona is another cherishable factor of this story!

Review – 'Nimona' by Noelle Stevenson – Dundee Comics Creative Space

Ambrosius Goldenloin, (please take a moment to appreciate the name XD) “the hero” felt a bit shady at first but as the book proceeded we get to see two sides of the story making it more interesting.

  • The plot

The plot is definitely engaging. One side we have Nimona trying to wreak havoc, then Blackheart trying to babysit Nimona instead of villain-ing. And then there’s the tension with Ambrosius, a hint of bromance which I definitely wanted more of! And the disability representation! The root evil of the story is depicted pretty much from the start so there’s no surprise there but it’s the execution that keeps you engaged. Also, there’s a tiny plot twist at the end which made me root for Nimona and the story even more!

  • The pace

The overall pace of the story is pretty steady. What I can say, the story does not provide scope to be bored. You just keep on turning the pages and it’s a quick read.

  • The Art

One word. It’s awesome. The quirkiness and humour are transparent through and through.

Yaaas!

Blurb (from Goodreads):

Natsuru Nanao, a 6th grader who lives alone with his mother, strikes up an unlikely friendship with the reserved and driven Rio Suzumura. Natsuru plays hookey from soccer camp that summer, and instead of telling the truth to his mother, he spends all his time with Rio and her kid brother at their rickety house, where a dark secret threatens to upend their fragile happiness.

The tone of this book is a complete 180 degree from Nimona but it’s good in a different sort of way. This was very first Japanese manga, so I was unaware that you had to read the book from backwards. I was warned, no worries there but I just wanted to say that I found it fascinating! xD

The story revolves around Natsuru and Rio, two people of two different threads find them together in unpredictable circumstances.

We have Natsuru who lives with her mother. On the other hand, we have Rio who lives with her younger brother after the death of her grandfather, in the hope that her father would return soon. Rio has a pretty big secret and she takes care of her brother all alone. The reflection of burden and maturity is reflected in her character. It is only with the presence of Natsuru that she seems to smile.

Weathering With You—Trailer – Cinema Anime

The story starts with the mention of summer vacation where Natsuru is supposed to go to a soccer camp which he does not. Instead, he chooses the spend the whole summer with Rio and her brother. And the fregging cute kitten they rescued might I add! A beautiful summer romance develops between the two which definitely makes you want to root for the characters.

However,  the story is told in a short period and therefore, the pace is mildly quick. Natsuru’s struggle to change the reality of Rio, his ability to empathise shows his maturity at such a young age. It brings a smile on the face of the reader although the ending is quite bittersweet. It quite broke my heart. And with the beautiful art, it’s hard not to get totally immersed with the journey of our main characters.

Three years has passed since Roxanne left. She’s obeyed and fulfilled Remo’s every wish. His latest command, however, will send her back to Earth. Aware her presence Earth-side is furthering Remo’s plans, Roxanne delves into an impossible chase against time, the preternatural community, and herself. But she might already be too late, and Roxanne experiences firsthand that when desperate people are pressed against a rock, they’re willing to commit just about anything.

Okay, so… I loved this trilogy. I really did but somehow I was underwhelmed by the conclusion.

We see the consequences of the decisions made by Roxanne in book 2 that led to her present condition. She has become more ruthless and although she is unable to take direct action against Remo, her only goal is to stop him somehow from destroying everyone she loves alongside her world.

This book had a whole lot of action and impending doom kept me on my toes!

However, the pace was a problem for me in this book. I felt it was too slow-paced for almost entirely the book except for the last part of the book. Most of the information was necessary for understanding a lot of aspects of how the world functions in this trilogy. The thing is, it felt like too much info-dumpy in some cases which kinda made me lose interest. I think it was one of the reasons it took me some time to finish the book. Also, I felt that the whole book was a bit stretched and the ending too soon.

Despite this, kudos to world-building! I definitely loved how the author intricately built up these two different worlds.

Roxanna with her new powers is unstoppable, she tries her level best to save her near and dear. Zantry, Mwara and Vicky, I loved each and every one of them. And my heart broke for the characters who did not make it till the end.

Overall, this book was a fun read despite the hindrances and worth a read!

Yes.

Blurb (from Goodreads):

She no longer has to run and hide, but other problems have surfaced. Her clan has other plans for her, and even the combined might of the hunters might not be able to save her.

To survive, Roxanne will have to choose between being labeled a traitor and cast out as a rogue – or join hands with the darker powers to save her life, and the lives of her friends.

To achieve her goals, she’ll have to risk her life. But can she control the powers she’s still learning to use, and fears so much?

Heir of Doom was packed with action and it definitely kept me engaged throughout the read. Book 2 continues with Roxanne’s journey as she has joined the hunters and is training to become one of them. But her mixed-breed status of being half human and half preternatural lead to her being discriminated against in every context.

And dayum. It was tragic to see Roxanne getting no better treatment. Nobody trusted her outside and the scenario was pretty much similar with the hunters as well. In book 1 she gets kidnapped and experimented by the scientists and although her situation changes after the escape and joining the hunters, she does not get the deserved respect. She only has a countable number of trustworthy people among the hunters and none of them had the high power to actually do anything that would benefit. I would say, it was a reflection of real-life politics, of what actually happens most of the time. It really, really made me angry and sad at the same time. Nonetheless, I loved her fierce personality and her consistent urge to improve!

The first part of the book was a bit slow which gradually changed in the second part and for the better. But I would say, the pacing did not affect me much since all the new characters and the hunting part, definitely made it more interesting. I had a love-hate relationship with the fae characters and the introduction of Mwara sparked my interest since she was the actual daughter of her “evil” step-mother. But most of all, I absolutely adored Frizz!!

The plot twist was a shocker! I did not expect that to happen when the truth about her lineage was revealed. Also, a lot of questions get answered in this book and obviously, there was Remo! Tada! Our beloved villain. The twist after twist that ensured made me gawk which also kinda made me wanna tear through book 3 immediately. And sadly I had to wait…

Yes.

Blurb (from Goodreads):

Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most—a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen or remain a human forever.

The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby—it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good—But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?

This was one gorgeously stabby book.

“In my heart, I’m as wild as the ocean that raised me.”

Princess Lira is the heir siren throne, also known as the Prince’s bane because of speciality in stealing the hearts of princess rather than normal sailors like the other sirens. But when she performs a deed against her mother, she is cursed to become something she hates the most. A human. Meanwhile, Prince Elian is a pirate who specialises in killing sirens and is more interested in spending his life at the sea rather than become the next ruler after his father. Prince Elian sole aim is to hunt down Prince’s bane while Lira gets the order to bring Elian’s heart if she wants to return to her kingdom. Both of them start out in the same direction but when Lira gets the opportunity to bring justice against the unfair decision taken by her mother, a.k.a the Sea Queen, she changes her path in reaching the desired goal but along the way things start to change as they get to know each other.

Refreshing plot

The plot of To Kill a Kingdom was really unique. The twists and turns continuously surprised me The only thing that didn’t make it a 5 star read was the pace at the beginning.

“And the ocean, calling out to us both. A song of freedom and longing.”

I felt that the beginning of the ultimate journey of the plot took too much time. I mean, I wanted the protagonists to met a lot earlier than it happened in the book. Other than this fact, I have no other complaints. When the characters finally meet, it’s with a BAM! It felt like world war 3 was about to break out but as the book proceeded, so the did the plot in a neat manner.

Stabby book in a neat manner! Ha!

World-building

Oooh also the world-building was pretty good. I loved how the author eased us into this whole new crazy world. I have seen and read sirens as malicious creatures who lure their prey with this voices.

“Everyone is a blank canvas, waiting to be filled with the colour of discovery.”

But this was on another level. It was like, they enjoyed killing for fun. Which was very disturbing indeed. But somehow I could never hate Lira for her actions. Of course, she did a lot of wrong stuff but she still had humanity left in her.

Character Development

One of the main factors that worried me from the starting of the book was how would the romance develop in the book since both the protagonists had one goal in mind, that is to kill one another. But the character development in this book really surprised me. The characters were complex and they were fleshed out in such a thorough and detailed way that left me speechless.

“How strange that instead of taking his heart, I’m hoping he takes mine.”

I was like, how could those two ever fall in love with one another but surprisingly they did and wow, boy did I love it! Lira’s redemption was portrayed pretty well too. Well, if you can call it that. Also, the sea queen aka Lira’s mother was a straight up *********!! She sooo deserved what she got served in the end.

Action! Stabby stuff!

The action was one of the aspects which I enjoyed thoroughly. One thing or the other was constantly happening. There were numerous other characters who contributed equally to the story. The politics was also kind of intriguing but the last battle was the one which was spectacular. It didn’t end in a second which I have seen in many other books. The build-up was steady before the stuff went down. In a good way!

Overall, To Kill a Kingdom was pretty fantastic. Although I think the beginning took up more time than necessary but it was still engaging. The characters were the ones who kept me glued to the book and the pace was somewhat fast. The writing flowed smoothly as well and I was satisfied with how everything wrapped up in the end!

The year is 1956, and the Axis powers of the Third Reich and Imperial Japan rule the world. To commemorate their Great Victory over Britain and Russia, Hitler and Emperor Hirohito host the Axis Tour: an annual motorcycle race across their conjoined continents. The victor is awarded an audience with the highly reclusive Adolf Hitler at the Victor’s ball.

Yael, who escaped from a death camp, has one goal: Win the race and kill Hitler. A survivor of painful human experimentation, Yael has the power to skinshift and must complete her mission by impersonating last year’s only female victor, Adele Wolfe. This deception becomes more difficult when Felix, Adele twin’s brother, and Luka, her former love interest, enter the race and watch Yael’s every move. But dark secrets reveal dark truths, and one question hangs over them all: how far can you go for the ones you love?

My Thoughts

Okaaay, so I finally read this duology!!!!

In a million times I hadn’t expected it to end like that. Like seriously? How could it end like that?!! I am still pretty much upset about that fact but I cannot deny the fact that this duology was epically fantastic!

First of all, the plot of this duology was fresh and unique.

Sassy heroine? Check.

Full on adventure? Check.

Killing Hitler? Double check!!

I mean, I wanted to read this book for soooo long but for some reason I didn’t pick it up. So one day while going to work, I just started the ebook and I was hooked!!

“These were the names she whispered in the dark.
These were the pieces she brought back into place.
These were the wolves she rode to war.”

Yael has only one mission and that is to assassinate Hitler. Although Hitler does not make public appearances anymore, but the winner of Axis Tour which is an annual motorcycle race hosted by Germany in collaboration with Japan, gets to meet Hitler in the winner ball. Yael is a face changer which was one of the many projects done under the reign of Hitler. Due to all those experiments she lost everybody but she gained one deadly advantage. Now posing as Adele Wolfe, the winner of the precious year’s race, Yael takes her entry. But Adele’s old flame Luka and her brother Felix pose a major treat to her mission. It’s up to Adele weather she wants to utilize her brain or heart for reaching the end of this mission.

Wolf by Wolf was such an intriguing read. This book depicted the whole journey of the Axis Tour. I didn’t think reading about a motorcycle race would be this interesting actually! But it was so much more than that. This book kinda reminded me of the Hunger Games but this was definitely more fun. The participants in the race had to use various strategies to stay ahead in the race and although violence was not legal, it was definitely allowed as long as it didn’t get capture in the cameras. This definitely added a dangerous element to the book. Well aside from the fact of assassination which was a total suicide mission!

*Major Spoilers*

You can read the highlighted parts though!

*Proceed at your own risk!*

Blood by Blood was much more intense compared to book 1. The major twist at the end of Wolf by Wolf was expected but fairly surprising at the same time. Of course, that was going to happen! But what followed after was unexpected as hell. In book 1, the death of T actually quite shocked me as much as it did to Yael. I didn’t expect to actually feel bad for that guy. He might have sneaky and self-centered but he was just a guy who wanted to win like the others.

Book 2 started with a major bang where Yael broke out after the attempted assassination attempt. I particularly grew attached to Luka in this book, who unlike Felix gave Yael a real chance. Although romance was not a major aspect of this book, but it existed and I loooved the little moments between Luka and Yael. Another one of the major unexpected surprise about her fourth wolf made me tear up!

“Fear is not an excuse,” Yael told him. “Fear is being human.”

Whiiich brings me to Yeal’s past! The experiments done on her made me flinch every time. I couldn’t imagine Yael had to go through so much. But she grew up as a strong woman. Of course, she had her demons from the past but she knew how to fight them. She fought as fiercely as she cared. I loved her character so much. I mean, even after going through hell, how could she be so selfless?

And Aaron-Klaus. I really loved Aaron-Klaus. His death tore me apart too but one of the last revelations gave me some closure. So many deaths. There were too many deaths.

The development of characters throughout the duology was refreshing to read about. I was not a fan of Luka when I got first introduced to him but he slowly won me over. I didn’t think it would get my heart ripped apart in the end. And Felix, I really admired him. He just went from the best brother category to straight in my shitlist!! I mean, did he care about anyone beside his family? Ever? Whatever Yael might have done, she always protected him and Felix couldn’t even trust her this much. And Adele’s a real bitch.

I read Iron to Iron because I wanted to know what went wrong between the two of them. maybe Luka just misunderstood Adele but oh no! That was so not the case. Her shitty character was perfectly revealed in the novella. And on top of that, she added fuel to Felix’s doubts. I wouldn’t have cared if she died. I mean for that shit, Luka had to die!!! Freaking die!!!

I died too along with that.

“The wolves of war are gathering. They sing a song of rotten bones.”

Overall, Wolf by Wolf duology left me into pieces but I do not regret picking it up. This duology earned a place in my heart, forever! The plot was witty and executed in a unique manner. I loved some characters and hated some others with passion. I was really rooting for the resistance the whole way and although their fate was bittersweet, this book ended with hope. Hope for a new world.

Recommend it?
Yes!

Sooo guys, what are your thoughts on this duology? Did it break your heart like it did mine? Or is it still waiting in your tbr?

Blurb (from Goodreads):

Roxanne Fosch had a perfectly normal life at the age of twelve. Cool, popular, pretty, smart. Her dreams of a perfect, successful and prosperous future seemed well within her grasp.
By the time she was twenty-two, she had become a commodity. A fugitive. She was being hunted.
As Roxanne embarks on the dangerous quest to search for half-truths about her past, she discovers she’s not just an abnormal human, but a rarity even among her Fee peers.
She is hunted by scientists, keen to exploit her extraordinary abilities, as well as other beings far more dangerous whose plans for her she cannot fathom.

This book… you know guys, I have found quite a few hidden gems among the self-published books and this one is definitely one of them!

Roxanne has been sheltered her whole life, kept in a cage for experiments for many years until she escapes the clutches of the scientists who experiment on a preternatural creature like her. She may be vulnerable being completely alone out in the world for the first time but she knows how to take care of herself. Roxanne is constantly hunted though she has no idea about her origin or what she actually is. Her path coincides with Logan, a werewolf who becomes an ally but he is not someone without motive. As their paths continue to clash, it is up to Roxanne to decide which path she wants to head on.

An Intriguing Plot

I seriously did not expect I would end up falling in love with this book! Seriously, it was sooo damn awesome. roxanne reminded me a bit of Logan from X-Men but that’s where the similarity ended. The plot book was completely new and unpredictable journey. I mean, there were so many elements threaded together in such a way that it created an awesome storyline.

“When one faces pain on a daily basis, one either learns to live with it or let it consume him.”

Roxanna is on the run after escaping from the clutches of the scientists who have been experimenting on her for ages. She finally succeeds in executing her plan which she had forming for many years but trouble follows her like a shadow. Roxanne’s is curious about her heritage and her mother from whom she was taken by the scientist. I seriously hated those “so-called” scientists without a conscience who didn’t think a second time before hurting Roxanne just for their experiments. I loved the fact that despite what everything she had been through, she was tough and didn’t give up without a fight.

This book comprises a lot of supernatural creatures staring from vampires, werewolf, mages and even hybrids like her. The author managed to input all these different creatures in a single plot without creating a complex atmosphere. These supernatural characters usually blend in with the common people but for Roxanne, it is a whole new world. I loooved the action sequences! She was a woman who was fully independent and could handle herself. I was really afraid for Roxy when that weirdo powerful magician (the forgot the name!! Dramman maybe… whatever, that guy was hella creepy!) took her hostage and the trip to the other world was such a treat!

The history of Roxanne’s character was another intriguing aspect of this book. I had plenty of questions about the whole thing but everything became clear when I read The Curse which is a prequel to this book but I felt it was more suited to read it after finishing this one. It was a short read but I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

Layered Characters

Roxanne was a character not devoid of flaws yet despite everything, she seemed the most human to me as compared to the scientists. Her path crossed with Logan for the first time after she escaped the experiment lab. Logan was among one of the pursuers who were after her but unlike the others, he grew to care and respect for her. It took some time for me to warm up to Logan but he won me over in no time! One thing that I liked about Logan was that he was at least straightforward about why he needed her in the first place. Though I hated that he still kept secrets from her because whatever there is between them grows deeper as the plot proceeded. Roxanne also grew as a character which I thoroughly enjoyed.

“How can a monster tell if he’s a monster if he’s never known anything else?”

Oh, and how can I forget about Frizz!! I just love this kind of supernatural pets in books! They kind of turn up out of the blue but stays in your heart. I am very much excited to see Frizz in the sequel! 😀

Character development

When Roxanne first escapes, she is a complete mess. But slowly and steadily she learns to balance herself with the help of Logan. The development of the romance between Logan and Roxanne left me in awe. It was slow-build and it was more of a warm bond of trust than complete whirlwind romance. The two finally had someone to lean on although they would never admit that and they shared a certain level of intimacy. I loved the chemistry between them and after how the book ended, I can’t wait to see what happens to my precious characters!!

Overall,

Heir of Ashes and The Curse both were fantastic reads! There were so many elements to the plot yet I was never confused. I loved how the author neatly threaded everything in the end. I am curious to find out about the new life that she was offered and the society of the hunters but I can sense something big coming!! The pace felt a little here and there but it didn’t put me off the edge. I was completely engaged in this book from the very beginning. I seriously would have missed out on a lot if I passed on the opportunity to review this book!

Recommend it?

I went too long without a BTS gif!! XD

Yes!

Interview

I had the wonderful opportunity to review the author of this book! Here goes!

Hey there! I’m so glad to have you on my little blog today!

1. How did you come up with the intricate idea of your debut novel, Heir of Ashes?

A: I guess the idea to Roxanne’s story took root in my mind without any prompting of my own. I had a vague idea of what I wanted to write, how the story would begin, a notion about what I wanted to include in the middle, and a silhouette of an end, not to the first book of the trilogy, but to the trilogy as a whole. I had all these jumbled scenes running rampant in my head, ideas and actions for the entire trilogy, and to prevent myself from going insane, I shut them out and focused only on Heir of Ashes.
I can’t say there was anything special about it, except that the urge to write kept getting stronger, and once I gave in to the urge and started writing, the ideas became more solid and all I could do to keep up was keep on typing.

2. How would you describe your female protagonist, Roxanne Fosch?

A: Roxanne is a very complex person – naïve, kind, compassionate. She’s also had a horrific experience that left her somewhat jaded, mean and unfeeling at times. But deep inside, she’s just another girl trying to lead a normal life.

3. What is your writing process? How do you develop your plots and characters along with working with your external difficulties

A: There isn’t a particular process to my writing, except that I consider the story as a whole, a beginning to the story, a notion of the middle and the very end. I try to pick my scenes this way too, though I can’t say I always know what I want. Sometimes I sit and imagine how I want a particular scene to start, what I want in it, how I’d conclude that scene. Sometimes the images don’t flow like water though, and I need to relax, read a book, bake, and listen to music. Well, I guess I have a process after all. To be fair, a lot of times the story just keeps on flowing and I barely have any time to consider what’s next.
If I happened to think about a scene that I’d like included but that didn’t fit yet with the story, I’d add a note to the end. I had a lot to delete as I finished the first draft, but these notes served me well.
I’ll assume external difficulties here mean me being blind, and I can’t say that it affects my writing in a negative way, except when I’m editing. I need to focus hard then and make sure the words I used are the correct words – for example, then and than, its and it’s, be and bee, by and buy, and all the words that sound the same or sound alike. I had the auto correct on when I wrote the first draft too, and it didn’t always agree with what I wanted, so it would just go on and change the word to what it thought fit better. Of course, the auto correct wasn’t always right.
And then there were the randomly capitalized words.
That part, the editing part, was a nightmare, and I know a lot of those went unnoticed by me. Some of them were caught by the editor, and still, the person who did my last proofread bears testimony to how many of those the editor and I missed.

4. What were the difficulties you had to face while writing the characters?

A: I guess it was keeping their reactions in synch with their personalities and still make them sound real enough.

5. Give us a sneak peek of the sequel to this book. What can the readers expect from it?

A: In the second book, Heir of Doom, Roxanne is learning how to be more dependent upon herself. There will be a healthy dose of preternatural here, as this is now the circle she runs in, but not all are friendly towards her. She will be deceived, lied to, she will uncover more truths; learn some of the ins and outs of the clan. There will be a newfound friend, perhaps even a love triangle.
Frizz will feature more prominently, as well as the Sidhe people, like Lee, Queen Titania and Oberon. She will need to travel through the worlds, and this time her decisions will affect not only her life but the lives of others as well.
Alright, that was a big sneak peek.

6. Do you have any unique or quirky writing habits?

A: Hmmm, I’m not sure what unique would be as I’m not sure what other writers do, but once I finish a draft or a scene, I turn on the automatic reader and listen to what I wrote. It’s amazing how many things I’m able to fix through this process, how much I’m able to cover. True, if I keep repeating the same scene over and over, it eventually turns into a lullaby and I have a hard time staying awake.

7. Which books or authors is your inspiration?

A: A well-written book never fails to captivate me, but when I need inspiration, I turn to Nora Roberts.

8. What is your advice for aspiring writers?

A: Believe in yourself. Don’t try to compare yourself with other writers, you are not them.

It was great having you on my blog today! Thank you so much and I wish you much success in the future.

It was my pleasure, Poulami.

Daughter of the Pirate King –

There will be plenty of time for me to beat him soundly once I’ve gotten what I came for.

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.

More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

Daughter of the Siren Queen –

Alosa’s mission is finally complete. Not only has she recovered all three pieces of the map to a legendary hidden treasure, but the pirates who originally took her captive are now prisoners on her ship. Still unfairly attractive and unexpectedly loyal, first mate Riden is a constant distraction, but now he’s under her orders. And she takes great comfort in knowing that the villainous Vordan will soon be facing her father’s justice.

When Vordan exposes a secret her father has kept for years, Alosa and her crew find themselves in a deadly race with the feared Pirate King. Despite the danger, Alosa knows they will recover the treasure first . . . after all, she is the daughter of the Siren Queen.

Okay, wow. This duology was pretty great, especially book 2. All the piratey awesomeness was sooo worth it!

Alosa is sent on a secret mission by her father who is the Pirate King to retrieve the pieces of the map of lost treasures. She allows herself to be captured by the enemy in order to do so but Riden, the first mate of the enemy ship is too clever to fall for her tricks. And when feelings come in the way things start becoming complicated. Along with that when Alosa’s learns a hidden truth, her whole world turns upside down. It’s up to Alosa to choose her destiny and fight for it or give up everything.

*A biiiit spoilerish. Proceed at your own risk!*

The plot of this duology was pretty awesome and kept me on the edge the whole throughout the series. In book 1, Alosa cleverly plans her own capture to fulfil her goal to retrieve the map. Despite her well thought out plan, her journey was not an easy one. She had to face betrayals and plenty of struggles along the way. But the torture at the end of book 1 broke my heart. It was really cruel and disgusting how they made use of her powers of being a half siren.

“I am me because I choose to be me. I am what I want. Some people say you have to find yourself. Not I. I believe we create ourselves to be what we want. Any aspect of ourselves that we do not like can be altered if we make an effort.”

As a character, Alosa was pretty badass and cared a lot about her crew and treated them like her own family. Her faithfulness to her father despite his cruel treatment felt a bit weird but I guess she was brain-washed like that and I was glad when she finally understood the whole truth. She justified her father’s behaviour a lot and that showed how much she was psychologically affected. Sure, it made her a kickass pirate but she didn’t deserve to be treated like that by her own father. The nature of the Pirate King became more clear in book 2 as we get to see him up and close.

I enjoyed book 2 a looot more than book 1. It’s because of the fact that though as a heroine I loved Alosa and her feelings for Riden was only a facade at first which slowly started to become real as they gradually got closer to each other. This was the only factor that bothered me a little because she was basically using him. But this changed in book 2 which made me very, very happy because I basically wanted to bash their heads together. IIt took a little for me to warm up to Ridden but as the book proceeded, he managed to win me over! He was sweet and caring but stubborn like Alosa too!

“I may not have been born in the sea, but I was born to rule it.
I am the daughter of the siren queen.”

Anyway, book 2 had a lot of more action than book 1 which I really enjoyed. I enjoyed how the pace was build up and finally executed in such a unique fashion. I seriously didn’t see the twist coming. I thought that there was going to be something like that but not in the exact way it happened and I was glad to see Alosa get closure. IThe final showdown was pretty epic, it reminded me a lot of Pirates of the Caribbean. 🙂

Overall, Daughter of the Pirate King duology was a great read! I don’t think I have read many pirate books or any pirate book in fact and I enjoyed this journey so much! I had a great adventure along with Alosa and I definitely enjoyed the character growth. The plot was executed neatly and it was fast paced throughout the series which made it a pretty quick read!

Yaaas!

Soooooo guys, have you read this duology yet? What did you think about it? Do you have any good pirate book recs?? Or good siren ones?

Blurb (from Goodreads):

It is not easy being Magnus Bane. As a warlock, he’s often called upon to fix the problems of others. His life has been long, and his loves have been many. And Magnus has a way of making sure he’s in the right place at the right – or perhaps wrong – time. The French Revolution, Prohibition, the first great battle between Valentine and the New York Institute…

Magnus was there, and usually in the middle of it. Magnus will never be able to tell all of his tales. No one would believe him. But these eleven stories shed a little light on his often inscrutable character. They are stories he probably wishes had never got out.

Soooo, Magnus Bane is not only my favourite warlock but also my favourite character in this entire freaking universe and cosmic galaxy! He is just out of this world awesome and an amaaaaaaaazing person!!! And hilarious 24/7!!

“You’re sarcastic twelve hours a day, but you’re almost never spiteful. You have a good heart under all the glitter.”

And yes, I am guilty of this starting this so freaking late! Anyway, this book is best to read after finishing The Infernal Devices trilogy and The Mortal Instruments series or after book 5 of TMI series.

First of all, this book is hilarious and made me fall in love with Magnus all over again. He’s really a sarcastic yet an awesome warlock full of glittery magic who’s ready to help his friends in need in any situations no matter what but doesn’t show his vulnerable side to just anybody.

The story begins in early 1700’s and goes all the way to present time that we get to see him in The Mortal Instruments series. In this book, we get to see the friendship between Magnus and Catarina and also dear old Ragnor Fell. As much as I adored Catarina and Magnus’s friendship, with Ragnor it was a bit… ehh you can say complicated! XD But entertaining as well! Especially their conversations were pretty much hilarious.

Among the 11 stories, The Rise Of Hotel Dumort and The Last Stand (also I think that this story was in the wrong order) felt a bit bland compared to the rest but Magnus’s wit and sarcasm made up for it.

“Magnus, you were trying to flirt with your own plate.”
“I’m a very open-minded sort of fellow!”
“Ragnor is not,” Catarina said. “When he found out that you were feeding us guinea-pigs, he hit you over the head with your plate. It broke.”
“So ended our love,” Magnus said.

Ooooh oh, we also get to see how Magnus’s love affair with Camille begun in the first place and how everything went up in flames later on. Magnus struggled to find a place which he could call home because whereas his friends came and went, he went on living endlessly being an immortal. He never showed how much it affected him but I feel like I have known Magnus forever, it’s… I can’t exactly explain but you understand the pain. I also loved the one where he saved Raphael! And we also get to see the one and only disgusting Herondale there ever was!! And baby Clary!

The most amazing and funny stories were the ones which involved him and Alec. Ah!! My favourite OTP of the century!! ❤ What To Buy The Shadowhunter Who Already has Everything was pretty hilarious. Magnus’s even calls in a demon (for a different reason) but it ends up giving him dating advice! XD It was hilarious! Also, this was the only demon I liked! Also, in The Course of True Love, we get to see Magnus and Alec’s first official blunderous date which turns awesome because of some unforeseen events!

This was one of the most badass kiss of this century!

Last but not the least, this book ends with The Voicemail of Magnus Bane. This is the incident which happened in book 5 of TMI series when Magnus breaks up with Alec but I kinda forgot about the reason. I think I know but I am not totally sure about it. (If anybody 100% knows please let me know in the comments below!)

“Trust. It is like placing a blade in someone’s hand and setting the very point to your heart.”

Overall, The Bane Chronicles was a very pleasant and an awesome experience! Nothing can go wrong where there is Magnus Bane… um, well not exactly but one will never be bored as long as he is present! I enjoyed the narrative style and the pace was even throughout the book. I love the Shadowhunters universe so freaking much, so much that I never want it to end!!

Recommend it?

Why is that even a question!

Soooooo guys, have you read this yet? Are you a fan of Mr Bane? Also, have you started with Shadowhunters season 3??

Duology Review: The Crown’s Game & The Crown’s Fate || Where the Crown lost its Fate in my Heart

Blurb (from Goodreads):

The Crown’s Game:

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air.

They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side. And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip-smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love . . . or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear . . . the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

The Crown’s Fate:

Magic is growing, shadows are rising, and the throne is at stake…

Russia is on the brink of great change. Pasha’s coronation approaches, and Vika is now the Imperial Enchanter, but the role she once coveted may be more difficult—and dangerous—than she ever expected.

Pasha is grappling with his own problems—his legitimacy is in doubt, the girl he loves loathes him, and he believes his best friend is dead. When a challenger to the throne emerges—and with the magic in Russia growing rapidly—Pasha must do whatever it takes to keep his position and protect his kingdom.

For Nikolai, the ending of the Crown’s Game stung deeply. Although he just managed to escape death, Nikolai remains alone, a shadow hidden in a not-quite-real world of his own creation. But when he’s given a second chance at life—tied to a dark price—Nikolai must decide just how far he’s willing to go to return to the world.

With revolution on the rise, dangerous new magic rearing up, and a tsardom up for the taking, Vika, Nikolai, and Pasha must fight—or face the destruction of not only their world but also themselves.

As much as I love the beautiful colour combination of this book, I am disappointed to say that it didn’t live up to my expectations. I did have high hopes for this duology although the premise was unique but it still failed to make an impression.

When Vika is finally called for the role of an Enchanter, she learns there is another one in Russia, Nikolai and she has to fight him. Whoever stays alive until the very end, becomes the Tsar’s Enchanter. But when feelings come into the way, things become complicated and Pasha who is the heir to the tsardom best friend life falls into a dilemma because one is the girl he is falling for and the other is his best friend.

Soooo, the plot was kinda like the mini-hunger games except with only 2 participants and it involved actual magic! We are introduced to the two enchanters Vika and Nikolai, both whose characters I enjoyed individually. But can someone tell me when did the romance happen? Yes, they felt a certain kind of kinship because they both shared a magic which was a burden at that current point but other than how did the love happen, they didn’t even get to spend much time together as they had to plan for the next attack against each other. The romance was a big downfall in this book.

The book takes place in Russia, a different kind of Russia where magic still exists but other than some of the town descriptions, I found the world building very lacking. There was a lot of scopes but it didn’t live up to that point.Though I did enjoy the magic, it was pretty intriguing but I wanted mooore!! The plot twist at the end of book 1 was a little surprising due to which I wanted to continue book 2. But I thought it was going to creepy and stuff! It was but I didn’t feel the chill in my bones.

No, I am not being over-dramatic. Or I might be. It’s just in my DNA!
(Haha… yeah I couldn’t stop without a reference!!)

The pacing of both the books felt a little slow but book 2 was a bit more. The fact surrounding Nikolai didn’t hold much mystery and oh well… Also, unfortunately, Pasha wasn’t an interesting character either. And there wasn’t much character development in book 2 either but I’m glad at least he could hold down the fort. He mostly acted like a puppet like his sister told him to do and he was just, I don’t know he was not a memorable character. He was still okay until book 1 but his decision betrayed me but after that how much he repented didn’t matter much to me.

Overall, The Crown’s Game dulogy was an okay read, I wanted more of the magic stuff. It was there but I needed mooooore of it!! The writing flowed smoothly. And overall it was still engaging enough for me to finish the duology. Although most of the stuff had let me down, I’m still glad I gave it a try.

Recommend it?

Yes.

Sooo guys, what do you think about this duology? Have you finished it or are you still halfway? How was the experience for you??
