1. Finding Your Voice: Writing in First Person (or Third)

The best way to find your writing voice is, in my opinion, writing about something you love. For me it was writing fanfiction of videogames, books, etc that I loved. That really helped me to just write naturally, because the characters were already in my head, and so was the world. So all that was left was my own voice, and I could see it clearly coming through. I guess my recommendation is to write fanfiction, then! It helps to hone your skills and story-telling abilities a ton, especially if you write in a universe you really and truly love. The more you love it, the better your writing/honing will turn out to be!

Another way is to play around with tenses. A lot of people write first person present tense, which is my preferred favorite, but flexing your writing muscles by writing third person past or even the off-the-wall second person are great exercises. Different tenses really push you beyond your comfortable boundaries as a writer, and helps you find what you’re really good at. You can even switch it up in the same book, though you have to be careful about confusing your readers with that advanced move. It’s a delicate balance.

Thank you for having me!

Blurb:

Isis Blake hasn’t fallen in love in three years, forty-three weeks, and two days. Or so she thinks.

The boy she maybe-sort-of-definitely loved and sort-of-maybe-definitely hated has dropped off the face of the planet in the face of tragedy, leaving a Jack Hunter–shaped hole. Determined to be happy, Isis fills it in with lies and puts on a brave smile for her new life at Ohio State University.

But the smile lasts only until he shows up. The menace from her past—her darkest secret, Nameless—is attending OSU right alongside her. And he’s whispering that he has something Isis wants—something she needs to see to move forward. To move on.

Isis has always been able to pretend everything is okay. But not anymore.

Isis Blake might be good at putting herself back together.

But Jack Hunter is better.

Before I delve into the darker side, that cover is funny af!! XD I mean this was such a hard book to read but that cover…

This book was really unpredictable and it messed my feelings. I still am not over it. It deals with some pretty heavy issues but they were handled sensitively and realistically. But I am glad that I got to read this series. You can read my review of book 1: Love Me Never, here and book 2: Forget Me Always, here.

*Spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk!*

After Sophia’s death, Jack drifted away leaving everyone else behind. He wasn’t there when Isis needed him the most. Now, she’s starting college, lo and behold, she comes face to face with Jack there who tells her he’s working a case. The unsaid feelings are not going away anywhere but will Jack and Isis find their way back to each other?

“I’m surrounded by people here, but I’m completely alone.”

This book! Oh my God! The feels!!

I was drowning at times but this book was the perfect conclusion to this series. After Sophia’s unexpected suicide, everybody reacted differently. Wren was heartbroken, Isis felt lost, Jack drifted away, My heart completely broke for Isis, the strong and sassy girl I knew was trying to drown her feelings by drinking and partying, even taking drugs which are something completely opposite to her. I could never imagine Isis trying to cope her feelings in that way but she did. It was overwhelming sometimes and I was on the verge of tears.

Jack, I don’t know what to feel about this guy. I mean, I loved Jack but taking off all of a sudden, leaving your loved ones behind when they need you the most? He let me down. Jack’s “profession”, the one he had to do for the money for Sophia’s treatment was something he always hated but had to do out of necessity, he always felt used no matter the job but how he do the same to Brittany? Albeit, she was someone I didn’t like a bit but still how!! I was enraged! This really didn’t sit well with me.

And how can I forget about Nameless. That guy did a number on Isis. She was a master at hiding behind her facade but when face to face with Will, we got to see her vulnerable side. I wanted to fucking kill that guy, for what he did to Isis and thinking it was completely alright. And also for him, she started suffering from body image issues and he thought that was something completely fine to say later stating that he owned her. Really? He disgusted me to no ends. He got the perfect punishment in return but even that was less regarding what he actually did. But I was pleased how Isis handled everything!

“Living is really weird. You never get used to it. But it happens anyway. And sometimes you find things that make it a little more comfortable, and you try to hold on to those things, and the tighter you hold, the faster they slip away.”

Yvette and Diana were the two characters I adored to death. They were perfect for each other and such great friends to Isis. They were the one along with Kayla who was really there for Isis when she was falling apart. I was so glad when Isis finally decided to get help, she really spiralled out of control but she knew she didn’t want to do that much damage to herself, so she stepped up for herself. That required quite a lot of guts. She continued to amaze me with her courage and I in that moment I felt so proud of her.

I was glad Gregory knocked some sense into Jack. He knew it, he knew everything yet he continued to hurt Isis just because he didn’t want to face the truth. But I”m glad that when he understood how wrong he was, he decided to fight back for her. That was the only redeeming quality for which I partially forgave him. The relationship between the two escalated quickly and it was something I had been waiting for a long time, I was so happy to see them finally together.

Overall, Remember Me Forever was a great read. I loved it, I hated it but in the end, it was worth it. The plot was unpredictable and I enjoyed how it was executed and I couldn’t put this book down. The writing was smooth and easy to read and the pace was even throughout the book.

And ending this review with a relatable note-

“Hogwarts didn’t even send me a letter and I haven’t actually forgiven them for that. Wait until I go to London and find Platform Nine-and-Three-Quarters and slip through to the other side and unleash my rage. I’ll make Voldemort look like a sock puppet. And I’ll make-out with Draco. And I’ll train a bunch of house-elves to fan me and bring me grapes -”

Recommend it?

Yes.

Blurb (from Goodreads):

All warfare is deception. Even in high school.

It’s been nineteen days since Isis Blake forgot about him. The boy she can’t quite remember. She’s stuck in the hospital with a turban-size bandage on her head, more Jell-o than a human being should ever face, and a tiny bit of localized amnesia. Her only goal? To get out of this place before she becomes a complete nutjob herself.

But as Isis’s memories start to return, she realizes there’s something important there at the edges of her mind. Something that may mean the difference between life and death. Something about Sophia, Jack’s girlfriend.

Jack Hunter—the “Ice Prince”—remembers everything. Remembers Isis’s purple hair and her smart-ass mouth. Remembers that for a little while, Isis made him feel human. She made him feel. She burned a hole in the ice…and it’s time to freeze back up. Boys like him don’t deserve girls like her. Because Jack is dangerous. And that danger might be the only thing protecting her from something far more threatening.

Her past.

My Thoughts

This book was surprisingly entertaining than book 1, I really liked it so much! You can read my review of book 1, Love Me Never, here.

*Contains minor spoilers of book 1.*

Love Me Never ended with a sort of massive cliffhanger after “an incident” happens to Isis. She returns back to her normal life but a part of her is missing. Her new found friendship with Sophia surprises everyone and then there’s Jack who she doesn’t remember a thing about. When things finally begin to make sense for Isis, old threats arise. Will Isis be able to survive it once again?

This book was so fun to read about. I remember complaining about the lack of humour in book 1 but this book really made up for it. The plot was really enjoyable and I loved this book from the very beginning. Isis seemed like a whole new person and I really liked it. I loved her character development. I was so glad to see a trial for that freaking guy, I so hope he doesn’t come back. But he’s only the only threat in Isis’s life. I can’t wait to see how that is executed!

I didn’t know what to think of Sophia, she attitude jumped constantly between hot and cold but I loved Isis for not giving up on her. I definitely liked Jack, he went through a freaking lot but the kind of love triangle was there. Sophia’s insecurities were logical but things were already out of her hand. But I liked reading more backstory about her in this book.

I enjoyed the banter between Jack and Isis but the scenes between them were few. I hope to get mooore in the next book. Nonetheless, I liked the chemistry between them. The other minor characters also played their role, I liked reading about Wren the most.

Overall, Forget Me Always was a great read. I enjoyed the plot and the characters and they kept me hooked throughout the book. I loved the romance between Isis and Jack, even though it was little. The writing was smooth and the pace was even throughout the book. I can’t wait to read the conclusion of this series!

Recommend it?

Yes.
